The kiku is regarded as a symbol of the subtle sense of beauty held by the Japanese people; it was even used in the title of Ruth Benedict’s book on Japan, “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword.”
そば猪口の植物文様のデザインの中でもダントツに多い「菊」。
菊は日本人の持つ繊細な美的意識の象徴と見なされ、ルース・ベネディクトの日本研究の書『菊と刀』のタイトルともなっています。
